1. Pistons

LO 7-02: Classify pistons according to their application, design, construction features, and material.

Pistons

One of the most important components in a reciprocating engine is the piston. Tremendous heat, pressure, and inertia forces are endured by the pistons as they absorb combustion energy and transmit it to the other reciprocating and rotating parts of the engine Figure 4. In order to operate reliably for many hours under extreme conditions, in high horsepower and high-speed engines, pistons require some important construction features. Piston design is a major factor in determining a variety of engine characteristics, such as maximum power output, emissions characteristics, operating speed, oil consumption, and durability.
