V

V-Pulse

An internal EGR system used by Volvo that uses cooled EGR gas and depends on natural pressure pulses in the exhaust system to supply exhaust gases to the intake manifold.

valve closed orifice (VCO) nozzle

A closed-type nozzle valve with little or no sac volume to cushion the nozzle valve when it seats.

valve opening pressure (VOP)

The pressure required to unseat the nozzle valve and begin the injection of fuel; also known as nozzle opening pressure (NOP) .

valve overlap

The angle in crankshaft degrees at which both the intake and the exhaust valves are open; overlap occurs at the end of the exhaust stroke and at the beginning of the intake stroke.

valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery

A type of completely sealed lead-acid battery that does not require the addition of water; also called a sealed lead-acid battery (SLA) or recombinant battery .

vane pump

A device that pressurizes fuel inside the pump housing.

vane-type pump

A pump that uses rotating vanes or rollers to pressurize fuel.

variable capacitance pressure sensors

A type of active sensor that measures both dynamic and static pressure using a fixed and movable capacitor plate.

variable geometry turbocharger (VGT)

  1. A turbocharger with the capability of changing boost pressure independent of engine speed and load; also known as variable nozzle turbocharger (VNT) and variable vane turbocharger (VVT) .
  2. A turbocharger with the capability of changing boost pressure and exhaust back pressure independent of engine speed and load; also known as variable nozzle turbocharger (VNT) and variable vane turbocharger (VVT) .

variable geometry turbochargers (VGTs)

Turbochargers with the capability of changing boost pressure or electronically varying boost and exhaust back pressure independent of engine speed and load; also known as variable nozzle turbochargers (VNTs) or variable vane turbochargers (VVTs) .
