R

radial piston pressurization

A distributor pump design that uses two or four plungers arranged opposite one another inside a cam ring to pressurize fuel; also known as opposed plunger pressurization .

radio frequency interference (RFI)

A category of EMI caused when radio waves induce current into wiring or electrical components that act as a receiving antenna.

Rankine cycle

A concept used by a heat exchanger to extract heat from low-temperature fluids or gases and then convert the heat of evaporation into another form of power. A Rankine cycle device frequently contains a fluid with a low boiling temperature that evaporates, and its energy is transferred to another device.

rate shaping

Optimizing the injection discharge curve to best match engine operating conditions.

rate-shaped injection

An injection strategy that carefully regulates the amount of fuel injected into a cylinder per degree of crank angle rotation.

rated horsepower

The power output of an engine measured at the maximum engine speed.

rated speed

An engine’s maximum speed with a load.

ratiometric sensors

Sensor with an output signal that changes in proportion to the supply voltage. A potentiometer is an example of this kind of sensor.

rationality faults

See logical faults .

reactive inductance

Also known as reactive resistance ; it is current induction in a coil of wire that is caused by the movement of expanding or collapsing magnetic fields. Induced current resists the inflow of supply current to the wire coil.
