P

P material

A material with a movable positive charge.

PACE

A partial-authority Cummins engine system that combines the mechanical PT pump with an electronic fuel control valve on the outlet of the fuel pump, which varies pressure supplied to unit injectors.

paraffin

A type of wax dissolved in diesel fuel.

parallel flow head

A head design that features intake and exhaust manifolds on the same side of the engine and short, large ports that are joined together to provide a more compact engine design with adequate airflow to the cylinders; also known as the uniflow design.

parallel turbocharging

The use of two turbochargers that share the exhaust energy from an engine’s exhaust manifold. The output of both turbochargers is connected directly to the intake manifold of the engine to increase airflow into the engine.

parameter group number (PGN)

A package of serial data transmitted over the CAN network that includes SPN, source addresses, and FMI as well as commands, data, requests, acknowledgments, negative acknowledgments, and fault codes.

parameter identifier (PID)

The value or identifier of an item being reported with fault data.

parasitic draw

Unwanted drain on the vehicle battery when the vehicle is off; also called key-off electrical load .

parasitic electrical loads

Also called key-off loads , these are electrical circuits that draw current from the battery when the ignition is switched off.

parasitic load

Mechanical engine component that consumes engine power, reducing engine power available at the flywheel.
