M

Magnehelic gauge

A gauge that measures both pressure and vacuum using inches or a water column as a measuring unit.

main bearing journals

The crankshaft surfaces located along the crankshaft centerline supported by the main bearing caps.

major domain controllers

Engine control units used in major control systems, such as the engine or electrical system, that regulate the operation of multiple components or other subsystem ECUs.

major side thrust

Piston side thrust caused by cylinder pressure and the angle of the connecting rod during power.

malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)

A dash-mounted warning light required by OBD-II legislation to alert the driver to a potential emissions-related fault.

mapless model predictive control (MPC)

An advanced type of MPC system that does not use look-up tables and has a model-optimizing mechanism to correct model errors in real time.

mapped model predictive control (MPC)

A type of model predictive control system that generates the optimal set of control signals using virtually generated set points or predicts which set of look-up tables to use as set points.

mass airflow (MAF) sensor

A device that measures the weight of air entering the engine and can detect air inlet restrictions caused by a restricted air filter or intake when pressure drops below a threshold value.

mass airflow (MAF) sensors

Devices that measure the weight of air entering the engine and detect air inlet restrictions caused by a restricted air filter or intake when pressure drops below a threshold value.

mass-based variable torque (MBVT)

A software-based torque control system that automatically adjusts engine torque output to match vehicle weight and load conditions. MBVT improves fuel efficiency and performance.
