I

idle

The lowest speed at which an engine runs without any throttle applied.

idle compensation

A response by the fuel system governor to a loss of contribution from one or more cylinders. The governor increases the quantity of fuel injected into the other cylinders to maintain idle speed.

idle validation switch (IVS)

A throttle input circuit used for safety reasons to verify throttle position.

ignition cycle

A key on, engine run, and key off event. It is shorter than an OBD drive cycle.

ignition delay

The time period between the beginning of fuel injection and the actual ignition of fuel in a combustion chamber.

in-block camshaft

An engine that has only the valves, rocker levers, and bridges located in the cylinder heads above the piston; the camshaft is located in the engine block. The cam may be a low- or high-mounted type; also known as a pushrod engine.

in-cylinder technology (ICT)

Navistar’s strategy of increasing EGR flow and precise control of combustion temperatures to meet the low NOx EPA-10 limit of 0.2 grams per brake horsepower-hour (g/bhp-hr) limit of NOx, without SCR aftertreatment systems.

in-range faults

See logical faults .

incipient fault

A fault that is the result of system or component deterioration.

indicated start of injection (SOI)

The commanded start of an injection event. Begins with an electrical signal and takes place before the actual start of fuel delivery into a cylinder. It is reported as the position of the crankshaft when the injection begins.
