D

DAF Vehicle Investigation Equipment (DAVIE)

A PC-based software tool package used to retrieve fault codes and perform electronic service on PACCAR engines. Referred to as Diagnostic Analysis for Vehicle Interface Equipment (DAVIE) in North America.

data bus

A type of communication pathway connecting engine control units in a network.

data flash (D-flash)

A category of reprogramming or the memory update of only the data or calibration information in an ECU or microcontroller.

decompression lobe

A component that lifts the exhaust rocker lever near top dead center to release engine compression.

deep-cycle battery

A battery used to deliver a lower, steady level of power for a much longer time.

deep-skirt block

A block configuration with a bottom edge that extends well below the crankshaft’s centerline.

degree of freedom

The number of control strategies that can be used to compensate for deterioration, wear, or faults.

degrees of freedom

The extent to which an engine control system is capable of accommodating faults by adjusting other control variables to minimize the effect of the fault. A system has greater degrees of freedom if it can modify more variables to compensate for a fault.

delivery valve

Valves that operate as a one-way check and allow fuel to remain at moderately high pressure in the fuel injection lines. The valves prevent secondary injections and help reduce injection lag.

Delphi E3 electronic unit injector (EUI)

A type of EUI that uses a dual-control valve, four-wire design, which enables high-speed, ultra-high–pressure operation with rate-shaped injection capabilities.
