STEP 1
Identify the type of coolant formulation based on coolant color. The decal next to the surge tank may not be correct if the coolant has been changed or contaminated with other coolant formulations.

STEP 2
Using an OEM or aftermarket test strip, dip the strip into the coolant and shake any excess coolant off the strip.

STEP 3
Using the chart on the test strip bottle, compare the color of the nitrite pad on the test strip against the chart scales.

STEP 4
Determine the level of nitrite in the cooling system in parts per million or as a percentage.

STEP 5
Using the service manual or test strip manufacturer’s recommendations, determine the amount of nitrite that may be needed based on the coolant formulation. The level may be acceptable, too high, or too low.

STEP 6
Drain the coolant to correct excessive nitrite levels, which can lead to deterioration of cooling system components, particularly hoses. Add the correct amount of extender, DCA, or SCA based on the cooling system capacity and coolant formulation.
