SKILL DRILL 11-6  Using a Refractometer to Test the Freeze Point of the Coolant

STEP 1
Remove the pressure cap. Be sure the cooling system is cool before removing it.

STEP 2
Determine the type of antifreeze and verify that the refractometer is designed to be used with it.

STEP 3
Place a few drops of coolant on the sample plate on the top of the tool.

STEP 4
Hold the refractometer roughly level under a light; look through the viewfinder and read the scale to verify the freeze protection of the coolant.

STEP 5
Return the coolant sample to the radiator or surge tank.
