Inspecting for a Leaking Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler
Loss of engine coolant without any visible external leaks may be caused by a variety of internal leaks. Additionally, over-pressurizing the cooling system can force coolant out of the overflow tank while leaking head gaskets and air compressors can consume coolant. A more common problem is a cracked EGR cooler, which can either over-pressurize the cooling system or allow engine coolant to leak into the cooler where it is mixed with exhaust gas and delivered to the engine intake. White exhaust smoke that smells sweet is an indication of an EGR cooler leak. The problem can worsen under hard acceleration. To inspect for a leaking EGR cooler, follow the steps in Skill Drill 11-3.
