LO 11-06: Identify and describe the construction features, types, and applications of the diesel engine cooling components.

Components of Cooling Systems

Transferring absorbed heat from the engine to the atmosphere is one of the primary functions of the cooling system. A number of components are involved in this task, including the coolant itself, water pumps, thermostats, various hoses, cooling fans, fan controls, and radiators. Heat is transferred to the atmosphere through radiators, which allow air to pass though cooling fins to release heat. Conventional cooling systems perform the tasks demanded of them by using mostly mechanical devices. Hybridized cooling systems used by the latest energy-efficient GHG-compliant engines do the same jobs but instead have electronic controls applied to the operation of thermostats, water pumps, cooling fans, and other cooling system controls. Water pumps may also be electrically driven to further reduce parasitic power loss, operating intermittently as on-demand-only devices.
