LO 5-03: Identify and describe common instruments and techniques to make linear precision measurements

Linear Measurement

Nearly all measurements common in shop practices involve measurements of length, which is the straight-line distance between two points. Because the measurement is a straight line, these measurements are more accurately called linear measurements . Linear measurements are so numerous and of such importance that a multitude of measuring tools are available for the purpose of obtaining them. Non-precision linear measuring tools include rulers and tape measures. For engine-related service work, commonly used precision linear measuring tools include:

  • Dial- and digital-type sliding calipers and vernier calipers
  • Micrometers—inside, outside, and depth type
  • Telescoping gauges
  • Thickness gauges (more commonly called feeler blades )
  • Gauge blocks
